What you would be giving up
STRETCHIT does two things well, and any alternative costs you at least one of them.
Instruction. A person on video demonstrating, explaining and pacing the session. For unfamiliar movements that is genuinely hard to replace with an illustration.
Structure towards a goal. Programmes and classes aimed at splits, backbends and a real home practice, with a sense of progression.
If both of those are what you want, the honest advice is to stay. The alternatives below trade one or both away for something else: cost, length, offline use, or a different audience.
The four, compared
| App | Format | Session length | Built for | Free |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STRETCHIT | Instructor-led video classes | 5 to 45 min | Splits, deep flexibility | Trial only |
| Bend | Illustrated routines, with a builder | Varies | Daily maintenance | Free tier plus premium |
| Pliability | Video library, added daily | Varies | Athletes, CrossFit | Trial only |
| GOWOD | Assessment-driven mobility | Varies | CrossFit, assessment-led | Limited |
| Lucy | Illustrated, timed, capped | 4 to 6 min | People who sit all day | 1 routine, complete, forever |
Which to pick, by reason
If the cost is the issue
Bend. It has the broadest ongoing free tier in the category, plus a premium upgrade. You lose the instructor and the goal structure, and you gain a large illustrated library on iPhone and Android.
Lucy has one complete routine free forever, but it is one of sixteen, so Bend is the better answer to this specific question.
If the sessions are too long
Lucy, which is ours. Everything is capped at four to six minutes and nothing longer exists in the app.
There is evidence behind the cap rather than just convenience. A 2025 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine, pooling 189 studies and 6,654 adults, found session gains flattening at roughly four minutes per muscle group and weekly gains flattening at about ten minutes per muscle group, with no advantage to any particular way of splitting the week up.
What that does not say is that a class is pointless. A long class covers many muscle groups and is a practice people enjoy, which is a legitimate reason to keep doing one.
If you want it offline
Lucy. Video classes need a connection; Lucy works fully offline and has no account at all. Three of its routines also work standing in about a square metre, which is the combination that matters in hotel rooms and on the road.
If you train rather than stretch
Pliability or GOWOD. Both are built for the CrossFit and strength world, Pliability on library size and daily additions, GOWOD on assessing your restrictions and programming from them.
Neither is a better STRETCHIT. They are a different product for a different week.
What no alternative gives you
Be clear-eyed about this. None of the four has instructor-led video classes aimed at splits. If that is the thing you wanted, there is no substitute in this list, and a cheaper app is not a cheaper version of it.
Lucy in particular has three "path" routines towards touching your toes, a full split and a deep squat, and it is still not a progression system. It does not have levels, it does not assess you, and it is not designed for athletes chasing splits. That is written into its brief, not an oversight.
What none of these do
All five are general fitness and wellness products. None provides medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and none is adapted to a specific injury or diagnosis.
Deep flexibility work is the area where this matters most. If you have a history of joint problems, hypermobility or a previous injury, speak to a physiotherapist before pushing into end range, whichever app you use. Our fitness and safety note sets out Lucy's position. Never force a stretch to reach a shape you have seen demonstrated.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to STRETCHIT?
It depends which of STRETCHIT's two strengths you can do without. Bend if you can do without the instructor and want a free tier. Lucy if you can do without both and want five-minute routines. Pliability or GOWOD if you train.
Is there a cheaper alternative to STRETCHIT?
Bend has the broadest ongoing free tier in the category. Lucy has one complete routine free forever out of sixteen. Prices for paid tiers are regional across territories, so compare them in your own store rather than trusting figures on a web page.
Is there a STRETCHIT alternative with shorter sessions?
Lucy caps every routine at six minutes, which is the shortest in the category by design. Bend also has short routines alongside longer ones.
Can you get splits without an instructor-led app?
People do, and Lucy has a splits routine, but it is a single six-minute sequence rather than a programme. For a structured path to splits, an instructor-led app is better suited and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Does any alternative work offline?
Lucy works fully offline with no account. Video-based apps generally need a connection, which is the practical difference if you stretch while travelling.
Is STRETCHIT worth keeping alongside a shorter app?
Some people do run both: classes at the weekend and a five-minute routine on weekdays. It is two subscriptions, which is the obvious cost.
